How Do You Turn Off Google Gemini?

The frustrating part of turning Gemini off is not that Google hides the switch. It is that there is no switch. Gemini is not one feature with one setting — it is a model that has been wired into Gmail, Android, Chrome, Photos, Drive and Search, and each of those has its own control in its own place, with its own name.

So the honest answer to "how do I turn off Gemini" is: decide what you actually want to stop, then flip the two or three toggles that stop it. Chasing a single master switch will send you round in circles.

This guide goes surface by surface, in the order most people need them, and is explicit about which ones cannot be fully turned off.

What is the short answer?

For a personal Google account, the two settings that do most of the work are both reachable from Gmail: Settings → See all settings → General → Smart features, and the Manage Workspace smart feature settings link underneath it. Turning off smart features in Gmail, Chat and Meet, plus the two Workspace-level toggles, removes the great majority of Gemini-powered behaviour from your Google account.

Then handle the standalone surfaces separately: the Gemini app's own app connections, Gemini Apps Activity, Chrome's AI settings, and Gemini in Photos.

For a work or school account, none of the above fully applies. Only an administrator can switch Gemini off in Workspace services, and that is covered further down.

Why is there no single off switch?

Because "Gemini" names three different things that Google ships separately.

The Gemini app

The standalone assistant at gemini.google.com and in the mobile app. This one you can simply not use, though on Android it may have replaced Google Assistant during a system update without asking.

Gemini features inside other Google products

Summaries in Gmail, "Help me write" in Docs, AI results in Drive search, editing suggestions in Photos. These are governed by the smart features and personalization settings, not by anything in the Gemini app.

Personalization that feeds Gemini

Separate again: Gemini Apps Activity controls whether your conversations are saved to your account, and connected-app permissions control what Gemini can read. Turning one off does not turn the other off, which is the single most common source of confusion.

If you live in the European Economic Area, Japan, Switzerland or the UK, note that the smart feature settings are off by default — so if Gemini is appearing in your Gmail, something turned them on, and you can turn them back off in the same place.

How do you turn Gemini off, surface by surface?

Gmail, Chat and Meet

In Gmail on the web, open Settings → See all settings → General, scroll to Smart features, and turn off Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat and Meet.

This is the setting that removes Smart Compose, Smart Reply, the summary cards above messages, and inbox categorisation into Primary, Social and Promotions. A few features with their own toggles — Chat conversation summaries, for instance — survive it and need switching off individually.

One caveat before you flip it: this setting is the one most likely to be re-enabled by a product update or a new-feature prompt, so it is worth re-checking after a major Gmail change rather than assuming it stayed off.

The two Workspace-level toggles

Under the same Smart features section, open Manage Workspace smart feature settings. There are two switches:

  • Smart features in Google Workspace — Gmail events appearing in Calendar, personalized search in Drive, and the Gemini features that summarize content or draft text
  • Smart features in other Google products — Maps reservations and to-go orders, suggested passes and loyalty cards in Wallet, and Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app and in Search

These two are the blunt instruments, and they are the ones most people are actually looking for. They can only be turned on from a web browser, so do this part on a desktop rather than in the mobile app.

The same two settings can also be reached from the product side if you prefer: Calendar under Settings → General, Chat under Data Privacy, Drive under Settings → Privacy, and Meet under General.

If you only ever change one thing on this page, change these two. They are the closest thing to a master switch that exists, and everything else in this guide is cleanup around the edges of them.

The Gemini app's connections

Open the Gemini app, tap your profile picture, then Apps. Turn off Google Workspace, and then Messages, Phone and WhatsApp individually. This stops Gemini reaching into those surfaces even when the app itself is installed.

Gemini Apps Activity

Go to Settings & help → Activity in Gemini on the web, or straight to the Gemini section of My Activity. Choose Turn off, or Turn off and delete activity if you also want the history gone.

Turning it off stops conversations being saved to your Google account. It does not delete what is already there unless you pick the second option. Worth knowing: Gems you have created are still saved even when chats with them are not, and auto-delete defaults to 18 months — you can change that to 3 or 36 months, or switch auto-delete off entirely.

Deleting is separate from turning off, and both are separate from the connection toggles above. A tidy pass is all three: turn activity off, delete the back catalogue, then remove the app connections you do not want.

Chrome

Two separate places. Under Settings → System, turn off On device AI, which disables the locally stored model. Under Settings → AI innovations, open Gemini in Chrome and turn its settings off, along with History search, powered by AI and Help me write. The AI innovations section is rolling out gradually and may not be present on every install yet.

Google Photos

Tap your profile icon, open Photos settings, then Preferences → Gemini features, and turn off Use Gemini in Photos.

Android, if Gemini replaced Assistant

There is no supported setting that reverts the swap. The app can be left unused, and its connections turned off as above; properly removing it means uninstalling the package with desktop developer tools, which is not a reasonable step for most people and is easy to get wrong.

Expect to repeat parts of this after each device change. Settings follow the account rather than the handset, but some mobile app toggles do not sync reliably, so a new phone can arrive with a surface switched back on.

What if you are on a work or school account?

Then the personal settings are not the lever. Gmail's smart features toggle will not remove Gemini from Docs or Sheets on a managed account — only an administrator can do that.

In the Admin console, Gemini features in Workspace services live under Menu → Generative AI → Gemini for Workspace → Feature access. Each service is listed separately — Gmail, Calendar, Drive, the Docs/Sheets/Slides/Forms/Drawings/Vids group, Meet, Chat, and Workspace Studio — and each is edited on its own with an On/Off choice and a Save. The default is on. Setting it requires the Gemini Settings administrator privilege and is available on a subset of editions, including Enterprise Standard and Plus, the Teaching and Learning add-on, and Education Plus.

The standalone Gemini app is a different control: Menu → Generative AI → Gemini app → Service status, then on or off for everyone. Changes can take up to 24 hours to propagate, though they are usually faster.

Two details that trip admins up. Settings can be scoped to an organizational unit or to a configuration group, and group settings override organizational unit settings — so a user in a group with Gemini on keeps it on regardless of their OU. And turning Gemini off for one service does not wall off that service's data: a user with Gemini on in Gmail can still ask it about a Drive file even when Gemini is off for Drive.

What do you lose by turning it off?

More than people expect, which is why the all-or-nothing approach often gets reversed a week later.

Turning off smart features in Gmail, Chat and Meet takes inbox categorisation with it, so Promotions and Social collapse back into one inbox. The Workspace-level toggle removes personalized Drive search and stops Gmail-detected events such as flight itineraries appearing in Calendar. On some configurations, spelling and grammar suggestions and priority sorting go too.

That is the real trade, and it is why the granular route is usually better: turn off the specific features that bother you in Gmail's own list, and leave the Workspace-level switches alone unless the data handling is your actual concern.

What can you not turn off?

Short-term retention. With Gemini Apps Activity off, conversations are still kept for up to 72 hours so the service can run and process feedback. They do not appear in your activity, but they exist.

Already-learned personalization. Turning a setting off stops further use of your data for that feature; Google is explicit that learnings already developed from it may persist.

Screen sharing to Gemini. Even with the other-Google-products setting off, actions that share what is on your screen with Gemini continue to work.

A few app connections. With activity off, a short list of connections stays available — device assistance, Gemini Notebook, Messages, Phone and WhatsApp — rather than being disabled along with it.

Shared links you already created. Deleting a shared chat does not disable the public link that was generated from it.

The consumer-terms caveat on smaller editions. Where the Gemini app is used as an additional service rather than a core one, it falls under Google's consumer terms, and conversations may be seen by human reviewers. If that is the concern, the fix is the edition or the admin setting, not a user toggle.

It is also worth being honest about why you are doing it. "I do not want my mail read by a model" and "I find the suggestions distracting" point at completely different settings, and conflating them is how people end up turning off features they liked in pursuit of a privacy outcome they did not actually get.

How does turning it off compare to the alternatives?

Turning off individual features instead. The best first move for most people. Gmail's smart features list is itemised, so Smart Compose can go while package tracking stays.

Turning off activity but leaving features on. The right choice if your concern is data retention rather than the interface. You keep the summaries and lose the saved history.

Switching the default assistant on desktop. If Gemini's presence in Chrome is the irritation, the AI innovations settings handle it without touching your Google account at all.

Using a different account for AI work. Heavy-handed but genuinely clean: keep one account with everything off for mail and documents, and a separate one where you actually want the model. If you are weighing which model that should be, our Gemini vs ChatGPT comparison covers where each one currently wins.

Leaving it on and ignoring it. Not a non-answer. Most Gemini surfaces are suggestions you can decline, and the cost of the toggles — losing categorisation, losing Calendar event detection — is real.

Final Thoughts

The practical version of this task is shorter than it looks. Open Gmail's smart features settings, decide whether you want the granular list or the two Workspace-level switches, then deal with Gemini Apps Activity if retention is your concern and the Chrome settings if the browser is.

Everything else is a surface-by-surface mop-up, and the one thing worth remembering is that these settings are independent. Turning off the interface does not turn off the data flow, and turning off the data flow does not remove the interface. If you only change one, you have solved half the problem.

And if you are on a managed account, stop hunting. The user-level toggles cannot reach Gemini in Workspace services on a managed domain — that is an Admin console setting, and the fastest route is a short, specific request to whoever holds that console.
