llms.txt generator

Fill in four fields and copy the result into a file called llms.txt at the root of your site: a plain-text summary of who you are, what you sell and which pages matter, for the AI assistants that look you up. Nothing leaves your browser. Format per llmstxt.org.

Your llms.txt
# Your company

> One sentence on what the company does, for whom, and what makes it different.

Want to see whether the assistants can reach it once it is live? The AI crawler checker reads your robots.txt and llms.txt together.

What llms.txt is, and what it is not

llms.txt is a convention, proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024, for a plain-text file at the root of a website that describes the site to language models: a name, a one-sentence summary, a short paragraph of facts, and a list of the pages that matter with a line about each. The idea is that a model deciding how to describe a company should have one trustworthy, current summary to read, rather than piecing one together from a homepage built for people and a dozen marketing pages.

It is not a standard every assistant honours. Google has said its search does not read it; some assistants and agents fetch it, others do not. It is also not a sitemap, a ranking signal or a substitute for pages that answer buyers' questions. What it is: cheap, harmless and occasionally exactly what a model needed. A few hundred words, written once and kept current, is the whole cost.

An llms.txt example

This is the shape the generator produces, filled in for SEO Stuff. A name as the heading, a one-sentence summary as a quote, a paragraph of facts, and the key pages as a list:

What to put in each field

  1. 1

    Name

The company or site name as you want it repeated. If people search for a shorter name than the legal one, use the shorter one.

  2. 2

    One-sentence summary

What you do, for whom, and what makes it different, in one sentence a stranger would understand. This is the line a model is most likely to reuse, so make it true and specific: "pay-per-use SEO tools and a $999 done-for-you package" beats "innovative digital solutions".

  3. 3

    A short paragraph

The facts an assistant would otherwise guess at: products and prices, where you operate, who it is for, how to get in touch. Numbers and names, not adjectives.

  4. 4

    Key pages

Five to ten pages at most, each with a line on what it is: pricing, the main product or service pages, about, contact, the best guide. The generator turns "Name - URL - what it is" lines into the list format.

After you publish it

  • Put the file at the site root so it loads at yoursite.com/llms.txt as plain text, next to robots.txt
  • Run the AI crawler checker to confirm the file is reachable and that robots.txt lets the answer crawlers in; a perfect llms.txt behind a Disallow: / rule helps nobody
  • Run the AI visibility checker to see whether ChatGPT and Perplexity recommend you for the questions your buyers ask; the file describes you, the pages and placements get you recommended
  • Update it when prices or products change; a stale summary is worse than none

Questions people ask

What is llms.txt?

A plain-text file at the root of a website (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that describes the site for AI assistants in a few hundred words: what the company is, what it sells, how to contact it, and the handful of pages that matter most, each with a one-line description. It was proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024 as a convention, in the same spirit as robots.txt and sitemap.xml, but for language models rather than crawlers.

Do ChatGPT, Google and the other assistants actually read llms.txt?

Unevenly. Google has said its search does not use it. Some assistants and AI agents fetch it when they look a site up; others ignore it. Treat it as cheap insurance: a clear, accurate summary in a place an assistant may check, which also happens to be useful to any human who finds it. It is not a ranking signal, and it does not replace good pages.

Is the generator free, and do I need an account?

Free, and no account. Everything happens in your browser; nothing you type is sent to SEO Stuff or stored anywhere. The other free tools on the site need a free account because they call paid data sources on your behalf; this one does not.

What should go in an llms.txt?

Four things: a name, a one-sentence summary (what you do, for whom, what makes you different), a short paragraph with the facts an assistant would otherwise guess at (products, prices, where you operate, how to contact you), and a short list of key pages with a line each. Keep it under a page. It is a summary, not a sitemap; do not list every URL.

Where do I put the file?

At the root of the site, so it loads at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt, served as plain text. On most hosts that means dropping llms.txt into the same folder as robots.txt. The AI crawler checker on this site confirms it is reachable.

What is the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?

robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch; llms.txt tells models what the site is. One is permissions, the other is description. A site that wants to be cited by assistants needs the first to allow the answer crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot) and can add the second as a summary.

Does llms.txt help me rank in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

Not on its own. Assistants recommend sites whose pages answer the questions buyers ask and that are cited by sources they trust. An llms.txt makes it easier for a model to describe you correctly once it is looking at you; the free AI visibility checker tells you whether it is looking at you at all.
