Answer engine optimization
Answer engine optimization, done for you.
More and more searches end without a click. Google answers them with an AI Overview at the top of the page, or in AI Mode with a full conversation; Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant read one answer aloud; ChatGPT and Perplexity write one. In every case the engine has pulled an answer out of a page, and it names that page as the source. If the answer came from your competitor's page, the searcher may never see yours.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of being the page the answer is pulled from. SEO Stuff does it for a fixed price: the questions in your category that get answered this way, the pages written to be extracted, the corroboration the engines check against, and a before-and-after report.
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so that answer engines, meaning Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, featured snippets, voice assistants and AI chat assistants, can extract a direct answer from it and credit the source. The term predates the chat assistants; it began with featured snippets and voice search, and now covers AI-generated answers as well.
How an answer engine chooses what to extract
An answer engine starts from a question and looks for the passage that answers it most cleanly. For a featured snippet or an AI Overview, that means a sentence or a short list that can stand on its own, close to a heading that matches the question, on a page the engine already ranks for the topic. For AI Mode and the chat assistants, it means the same thing across several pages at once, with the engine checking that the sources agree before it commits to an answer.
What gets extracted follows from that. A page that opens with a 40-to-60-word answer and then explains it gets lifted; a page that builds to the answer over 800 words does not. A heading phrased as the question beats a clever one. Numbers, dates and named sources make a passage safer for the engine to quote. And because answer engines prefer sources that agree, a fact that appears only on your site is treated with more caution than one that also appears on a site the engine trusts.
What we build for answer engines
- Question research: the questions in your category that currently trigger AI Overviews, snippets or assistant answers, and who is being quoted today
- Answer-first pages: a direct answer under a question heading, then the explanation, structured so an engine can lift the answer, with the FAQ and HowTo markup each page should carry specified alongside it
- A facts page and FAQ about your business, written so an engine can answer "what does X cost" or "where does X operate" without guessing
- 3 DR50+ placements that restate the key facts on sites the engines already trust, so your answer is corroborated
- Technical checks in the audit: pages that render without JavaScript, a robots file that lets the engines' crawlers in, an llms.txt file, and no answer hidden inside an image or a tab
- A baseline and after-report across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, with Google AI Overview citations tracked in the case studies
How the work is done
- 1
Find the answered questions
We identify the questions in your category that engines already answer directly, and record who they quote. Twenty of them, asked of the four assistants, become your baseline.
- 2
Audit and plan
A manual review of your pages against the pages being quoted, and a strategy guide naming the questions you can win and the structure each page needs. Within 7 business days.
- 3
Write answer-first pages
Ten pages, each led by a direct answer under a question heading, with the supporting detail, numbers and sources underneath. You publish them, or we hand them over ready to publish.
- 4
Corroborate
Three DR50+ placements that restate your key facts where the engines already look, so the extracted answer has backing.
- 5
Re-check the answers
The same questions, after delivery, with the before and after side by side. For weekly checks across fifty questions afterwards, the same team runs Rightcited.
AEO by business type
Which questions get answered directly, and from which sources, varies by category. These pages cover what that means for each kind of business.
SaaS companies →
"Does X integrate with Y", "how much does X cost" and "X vs Y" are answered straight from docs and comparison pages. Most SaaS sites bury all three.
Ecommerce stores →
AI Overviews answer product questions from buying guides and spec tables. A category page with a real answer at the top gets quoted.
B2B service firms →
"How much does a [service] cost" and "what does a [service] include" are the questions; a plain pricing page is the answer.
Small businesses →
Local and niche questions often have no good answer online yet. A direct, dated answer on your site can be the one every engine uses.
Agencies →
Answer-first pages for every client, with research credits for the question work and done-for-you fulfilment on a schedule.
AEO vs SEO, and AEO vs GEO
AEO vs SEO: SEO earns a position on the results page; AEO earns the answer above it. AEO depends on SEO, because engines mostly extract from pages they already rank, but ranking is not enough: the page also has to contain a passage the engine can lift. Many sites rank for questions whose answers are extracted from a competitor further down the page.
AEO vs GEO: generative engine optimization is the term for the chat engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude), where the answer is composed from several sources. AEO started with extracted answers, snippets and voice, and today is used mostly for Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. In practice the same page serves both: the direct answer an AI Overview extracts is the sentence Perplexity cites. SEO Stuff delivers them as one package.

Questions people ask
What is AEO in one sentence?
Writing and structuring pages so that answer engines (Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, featured snippets, voice assistants and AI chat assistants) extract their answer from you and credit you as the source.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO earns a ranking; AEO earns the answer displayed above the ranking. AEO depends on SEO, since engines mostly extract from pages they already rank, but a ranking page still loses the answer if a competitor's page states it more directly. AEO adds the structure: a question heading, a direct answer first, supporting numbers and sources, and schema markup.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They overlap almost entirely. AEO is the older term and today usually means Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode; GEO means the chat engines, where answers are composed from several sources. The same answer-first page serves both, which is why SEO Stuff delivers them as one package.
Does AEO still cover featured snippets and voice search?
Yes. Featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice answers are extracted the same way AI Overviews are, from a direct passage under a matching heading. Pages built for AI Overviews win those too.
How much does AEO cost?
$999 one-time for the Done-For-You Package, which is the AEO service: question research and baseline, audit and strategy guide, 10 answer-first pages with schema markup, 3 DR50+ placements, 3,000 research credits, dashboard and after-report. Delivered in 21 business days.
How do we measure AEO?
Your dashboard shows the baseline (twenty questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, with the full answers) and the after-report. For Google AI Overviews, Search Console shows the impressions and clicks, and the case-study figures on this page come from citation counts tracked over time. Weekly checks after delivery are available through Rightcited.
Will AI Overviews reduce our traffic?
For informational questions, often yes: the answer is on the results page. For commercial questions, being the cited source is what sends the click and the lead, and not being cited means the searcher never sees you. AEO is about the second kind of question.
