Free Google rank checker

Enter a domain and up to five keywords. For each one you get the position of the domain's best page in Google's top 50, the page that ranks, who holds the top three spots, and whether an AI Overview sits above the results. Neutral desktop results for the country you pick, not your personalized Google. It takes a free SEO Stuff account, which is what keeps the bots off it.

What a rank check measures

A ranking is the position of a page in Google's organic results for one query, in one place, on one device, at one moment. This checker reports the best page on your domain among the first 50 organic results for each keyword, as a neutral desktop searcher in the chosen country would see them. Ads, the map pack, shopping units and the AI Overview are not organic results, so they are not counted as positions, though the AI Overview is reported separately because it changes what position 1 is worth.

Rankings move. A term can swing a few positions day to day without anything having changed on your site. One check tells you where you stand; a check a week tells you which way you are going.

How to use it well

  1. 1

Pick the five keywords that bring money

Not vanity terms. The queries a customer types when they are ready to buy or book. If you do not know which those are, the Keywords Explorer shows volume, difficulty and intent for any term, and the Search Console 'queries' report shows what you already get impressions for.

  2. 2

Check a competitor on the same five

Same keywords, their domain. The gap between the two lists is your to-do list, and the pages that beat you show what Google thinks the query deserves.

  3. 3

Look at who holds the top three

If the top three are Wikipedia, a government site and a national newspaper, the term is informational and you will not outrank them with a product page. If they are competitors your size, it is winnable.

  4. 4

    Mind the AI Overview

When Google shows one, the organic results start lower on the page and a share of clicks goes to the overview's sources. Being cited there is the new position 1; the AI Overviews page explains how pages get picked.

Moving a keyword up

  • Not in the top 50: the page does not answer the query well enough, or the site lacks the authority the query demands. Start with the keyword difficulty guide: win supporting terms first.
  • Positions 11 to 30: the page is relevant but outgunned. Compare it with the top three for depth, freshness and the exact questions it answers, then earn a few referring domains to it. The Backlinks Explorer shows where the top three get their links.
  • Positions 4 to 10: on the first page, below the fold. Titles and the first paragraph decide clicks here; make the page the clearest answer and check whether an AI Overview is taking the top of the page.
  • Top three: protect it. Keep the page current, keep earning links, and make sure the page is also what the AI assistants cite; the AI visibility checker tells you.

Questions people ask

Is the rank checker free?

Yes. It needs a free SEO Stuff account, which keeps bots from running up the bill (every keyword is a paid request to Google's results), and nothing else. Ten checks of up to five keywords each per day.

Why is my position different from what I see in Google?

Your own Google is personalized: it knows your location, your history and the sites you visit, and it often shows your own site higher than a stranger would see it. This checker asks from a neutral desktop in the country you choose, with no history, which is what most of your potential visitors see. Local results (the map pack) are not counted as organic positions here either.

What does "not in the top 50" mean?

No page on the domain appears in the first 50 organic results for that keyword. Google rarely sends traffic beyond the first ten, so for practical purposes you are not ranking; the keyword difficulty guide below explains how to work towards a term like that.

Which countries and devices does it check?

United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India and Germany, on desktop. Mobile results are usually the same pages in a slightly different order; if you need both, Search Console shows them for your own site.

Does it track rankings over time?

No, it is a snapshot. Run it again next week and compare, or use Google Search Console for your own site, which records average position every day for free. For AI assistants rather than Google, Rightcited tracks weekly.

What is the AI Overview column?

Whether Google showed an AI-written overview above the organic results for that keyword, and whether one of your pages was cited in it. An AI Overview pushes the organic results down the page, so position 1 under one is worth less than it used to be, and being cited in it is worth a lot.

Can I check a competitor?

Yes. Enter their domain and the keywords you both want. Checking yourself and a competitor on the same five keywords is the quickest way to see the gap.
