How Do You Cancel a ChatGPT Subscription? (2026 Guide)
Carlos Garcia9/23/2026Cancelling a ChatGPT subscription should take about forty seconds. For a lot of people it takes twenty minutes of increasingly irritated tapping, because they are looking for the cancel button in the wrong place entirely.
The reason is simple and worth knowing before you start: where you cancel depends on where you subscribed. If you signed up in a browser, OpenAI bills you and OpenAI cancels you. If you signed up by tapping Upgrade inside the iPhone or Android app, Apple or Google is the one taking your money, and OpenAI cannot cancel it on your behalf even if it wanted to.
Almost every "I cancelled but I got charged again" story comes down to that split. Sort out which one applies to you and the rest is trivial.
How do you cancel a ChatGPT subscription?
Open ChatGPT in a web browser, click your profile picture, go to Settings, then Account, then Manage subscription, and choose Cancel plan. Confirm, and you are done. You keep Plus access until the end of the billing period you have already paid for.
If that path does not show you a cancel option, or it opens an App Store or Google Play page instead, your subscription is being billed through a mobile app store and you need to cancel it there. That is covered further down.
It is also worth knowing that cancelling and downgrading are not the same thing. If a cheaper paid tier exists and suits you better, changing plan keeps you inside OpenAI's billing and avoids the gap in access that a cancellation creates.
One timing rule matters regardless of platform: cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date. Cancelling inside that window often lets one more charge go through, and OpenAI does not refund partial months.

Cancelling on the web, step by step
This is the route that works for most subscribers, and it is the one to try first.
- Go to chatgpt.com in a browser and sign in. Make sure you are signed in with the same account that holds the subscription. If you have a personal login and a work login, this is where people go wrong.
- Click your profile icon, usually bottom-left in the sidebar or top-right depending on your layout.
- Open Settings.
- Select Account.
- Click Manage subscription. This opens OpenAI's billing portal.
- Click Cancel plan and confirm when asked.
You should see a confirmation that your plan ends on a specific date. Screenshot it. If a charge appears afterwards, that screenshot is the fastest route to getting it reversed.
If the billing portal asks you to confirm twice, or offers a discount to stay, keep going until you see a definite end date. Retention offers are easy to mistake for completed cancellations, and an offer you dismissed without confirming leaves the subscription exactly where it was.
Checking it actually worked
Go back to Settings and look at your plan. It should now say something like "Your plan will be cancelled on [date]" rather than showing a next billing date. If it still shows a renewal date, the cancellation did not go through and you should repeat the steps.
It is also worth checking your email for a confirmation from OpenAI. No email plus no changed status means nothing happened.
Cancelling an iPhone or iPad subscription
If you subscribed through the iOS app, Apple holds the billing relationship. OpenAI's settings page will send you to Apple rather than cancelling anything itself.
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name at the very top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Find ChatGPT in the list and tap it.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
Apple's list only shows subscriptions tied to the Apple ID currently signed in on that device, which is a common trap on shared or hand-me-down hardware.
If ChatGPT is not in that list, you did not subscribe through Apple, and the web route above is the right one. Check any other Apple ID you might have used before concluding it is missing.
Cancelling an Android subscription
Google Play works the same way in principle.
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile icon top-right.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel subscription and pick a reason when prompted.
Again, if ChatGPT does not appear, the subscription is not billed through Google and you want the browser route.

What happens after you cancel
A few things people reasonably worry about, in order of how often they come up.
You keep access until the period ends. Cancelling does not cut you off immediately. You have paid through a date and you keep Plus features until that date, then the account drops to the free tier.
That end date is visible in settings the whole time, so there is no need to guess. Many people cancel immediately after being charged and then use the full month they have already paid for, which is the sensible play given no refund is coming.
Your account is not deleted. Cancelling a subscription and deleting an account are entirely separate actions. Your login, your conversation history and your custom instructions all survive. If you want the account gone as well, that is a different setting and it is irreversible.
Your chat history stays. Old conversations remain readable on the free tier. What you lose is access to the paid models, higher usage limits and whichever premium features your tier included, not the record of what you did with them.
Refunds are unlikely. OpenAI's stated policy is that fees are non-refundable and partial months are not prorated. The main exception is a statutory cooling-off period in the EU, the UK and Turkey, typically 14 days from purchase. Outside those jurisdictions, asking politely through support is your only route and it is not guaranteed.
You can come back. Resubscribing later is a two-click job and your history is waiting where you left it.
When cancelling is the right call, and when it isn't
It is worth a moment's thought rather than cancelling in a moment of irritation at a bill.
Cancel if you are using it a handful of times a month for things the free tier handles perfectly well. Casual question-answering has got dramatically better on free tiers across every assistant, and paying for capacity you do not use is just a habit.
Cancel if you are paying for two or three assistants at once and could not honestly say what each one is for. This is extremely common. Pick the one that fits your actual work and drop the rest.
Consider downgrading instead if the issue is price rather than usage. OpenAI has been adding cheaper tiers between free and Plus, and a lower-priced plan may cover what you actually do. Our comparison of ChatGPT Go vs Plus walks through where the line falls.
Do not cancel if you are hitting usage limits regularly. That is the signal the subscription is earning its money, not a reason to leave.
Do not cancel mid-project expecting to resubscribe next week. You will pay a full new period either way, so you gain nothing.
Things that commonly go wrong
Signed into the wrong account. By far the most frequent cause of a missing cancel button. Sign out completely and sign back in with the email on the receipt.
Business or Team plans. These are managed by whoever administers the workspace. An individual member cannot cancel a seat; the workspace owner adjusts seats in the admin settings.
Subscribed through a third party. Occasionally a subscription is bundled through an employer or reseller, in which case neither OpenAI nor the app stores will show it. Look at your bank statement to see who is actually charging you.
Cancelled too close to renewal. Inside the 24-hour window, the next charge is often already in flight.
Assuming deleting the app cancels it. Removing ChatGPT from your phone does nothing at all to the billing. The subscription lives with Apple, Google or OpenAI, not with the installed app, and will keep renewing on a phone with no app on it.
Confusing the API with ChatGPT. An OpenAI API account is billed separately on usage. Cancelling ChatGPT Plus does nothing to API charges, and vice versa. If you have both, you have two things to deal with.

What to use instead
If you are cancelling because you want a different tool rather than no tool, the landscape is genuinely competitive now.
The free tiers are serious. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all offer free access to capable models with usage caps. For intermittent use, a free tier plus patience often replaces a subscription entirely.
Claude tends to suit long-document work, careful writing and coding. Our Claude vs ChatGPT comparison gets into where each one actually wins rather than listing features.
Gemini is the obvious pick if you live in Google Workspace, because the integration with Docs, Gmail and Sheets does real work that a separate chat window cannot.
Perplexity is built around answering questions with sources attached, which makes it a better research tool than a general assistant.
Copilot, in its Microsoft 365 form, is the equivalent argument for organisations standardised on Office.
The honest summary is that no single assistant is best at everything, and the sensible number to pay for is usually one, chosen to match the work you do most.
Final thoughts
Cancelling ChatGPT is only confusing because the billing path is invisible until you go looking for it. Work out whether OpenAI, Apple or Google is charging you, go to that one, and the cancellation itself takes seconds. Do it more than a day before renewal, screenshot the confirmation, and remember that cancelling the subscription leaves your account and history intact.
If the underlying question is whether an AI subscription is worth it for your work, the answer usually comes from looking at what you are actually producing with it. For marketing and content teams, that increasingly means asking whether your work is visible in AI answers at all, which is a different question from whether you pay for a chatbot. Our guide on how to rank in ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity covers that side of it.
