What Is the Best Cheaper Semrush Alternative? (2026 Guide)

Carlos GarciaCarlos GarciaPublished Updated

The best cheaper Semrush alternative depends on which part of Semrush you actually use. Semrush's paid plans now start at $139 a month ($117.33 a month billed annually). If you mostly look up keywords and check backlinks, a $29 to $39 plan or a pay-per-use tool covers that for a fraction of the cost. If you rely on daily rank tracking, site audits and AI visibility reports, Semrush or a full-suite rival like SE Ranking or Ahrefs is still the better buy.

Below are Semrush's current plans, the realistic alternatives and what you give up with each, plus worked cost examples. Every price was checked on the vendor's own site on October 7, 2026, and plans change often, so confirm before you buy. SEO Stuff is our own tool. It is in the comparison with its gaps spelled out.

How Much Does Semrush Cost in 2026?

Semrush now sells an SEO plan and three Semrush One plans (Starter, Pro+ and Advanced). The Semrush One plans add tracking for how your brand shows up in AI answers. This is the current lineup from Semrush's pricing page:

  • Free: $0. One demo project and 10 reports per day. No credit card.
  • SEO: $139 a month, or $117.33 a month billed annually. 5 websites and 500 keywords tracked daily.
  • Starter: $199 a month, or $165.17 billed annually. 5 websites, 500 tracked keywords and 50 AI prompts tracked daily.
  • Pro+: $299 a month, or $248.17 billed annually. 15 websites, 1,500 tracked keywords and 100 AI prompts.
  • Advanced: $549 a month, or $455.67 billed annually. 40 websites, 5,000 tracked keywords and 200 AI prompts.

Every plan includes one user. Extra seats start at $45 a month on the SEO and Starter plans, and Semrush's knowledge base lists $80 for Pro+ and $100 for Advanced. So a three-person team on the SEO plan pays $229 a month ($139 plus two seats at $45) before any add-ons.

What Each Semrush Plan Includes

  • SEO: basic keyword research and competitor analysis, Position Tracking and Site Audit, with a limited set of AI visibility features.
  • Starter: the SEO tools plus AI visibility tracking (50 prompts a day and 300 AI visibility reports a day for one domain) and MCP access.
  • Pro+: adds historical SEO data, content optimization, keyword cannibalization analysis, and multi-location and device tracking.
  • Advanced: adds SEO share of voice and API data integration.

Does Semrush Have a Free Plan or Free Trial?

Yes, both. The free plan gives you 10 reports per day and one demo project. That is enough for spot checks, not for real research. Semrush's pricing page also offers a seven-day free trial. Its refund policy says your first payment is charged automatically when the trial ends unless you cancel before then.

Semrush Refund Policy

Semrush offers a 7-day money-back guarantee only on first-time subscriptions with a term of 12 months or longer. Month-to-month subscriptions are not refundable. If you are unsure about a plan, use the free trial to decide instead of paying for a month and hoping for a refund.

Cheaper Semrush Alternatives Compared

No single tool replaces all of Semrush for less money. The cheaper options either replace one part of it well or offer a similar suite at a similar price. Here they are, grouped by what they replace.

SE Ranking: Closest All-in-One Replacement

  • Price: Core is $129 a month or $103.20 billed annually. Growth is $279 a month or $223.20 billed annually.
  • What you get: Core includes 2,000 keywords tracked daily, 10 projects, one seat and 100 AI prompts tracked daily. Growth raises that to 5,000 keywords, 30 projects and three seats.
  • Trial: 14 days, no credit card required.
  • What you give up: not much, but you don't save much either. On monthly billing, Core is only $10 less than Semrush's SEO plan. The real gain is tracking capacity: 2,000 tracked keywords against 500 on Semrush's SEO plan.
  • Best for: agencies and in-house teams who want a full suite with more rank tracking per dollar.

Ahrefs: Starter for Research, Lite and Up for the Full Suite

  • Price: Starter is $29 a month. Lite is $129 a month (about $107 a month billed annually, if the full 17% discount applies), Standard is $249, Advanced is $449, and Enterprise is $1,499 a month with an annual commitment.
  • What you get: Ahrefs pitches Starter as a way to see what people search and check on competitors. Lite includes 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords and 6 months of historical data. There is also a free plan with limited Site Explorer and Site Audit data for your own site.
  • What you give up: Lite costs about the same as Semrush's SEO plan, so switching saves little. Ahrefs says it does not issue refunds in general, and extra users on Lite cost up to $40 a month each, depending on usage.
  • Best for: people who want Ahrefs data on a small budget (Starter) or prefer its interface to Semrush's. Our Ahrefs pricing and Lite vs Standard breakdown goes deeper on that choice.

SpyFu: Competitor and PPC Research

  • Price: Basic is $39 a month ($33 billed annually). Professional is $79 a month ($58 billed annually), as listed on SpyFu's pricing page in October 2026.
  • What you get: Basic includes 10,000-row exports, 5,000 keyword rankings tracked weekly and 6 months of history. Professional adds unlimited exports, 15,000 tracked keywords, 10+ years of history and API access.
  • Guarantee: 30-day money-back guarantee and no contract.
  • What you give up: SpyFu is built around competitor keywords and ads. If you depend on scheduled site audits or AI visibility tracking, confirm SpyFu covers them before you cancel Semrush.
  • Best for: marketers who mainly study competitors' organic and paid keywords.

Mangools: Simple Keyword Research

  • Price: Mangools lists plans from $37.70 a month and says annual plans save 35%.
  • Free option: a free plan, no credit card needed.
  • Refund: a full refund if you ask within 48 hours of payment (this does not apply to two consecutive subscriptions).
  • What you give up: Mangools doesn't list plan limits on its comparison page, so check each plan's lookup limits on its pricing page before you commit.
  • Best for: bloggers and small sites that want an easy keyword tool.

Ubersuggest: Low Monthly Price or a Lifetime Plan

  • Price: plans start at $29 a month, which covers one project and 150 reports a day. Ubersuggest also sells lifetime plans for a one-time payment.
  • Trial: 7-day free trial on monthly subscriptions.
  • What you give up: the entry plan covers a single project, and lifetime purchases are final and non-refundable.
  • Best for: solo site owners who want a cheap all-round tool and can live with the limits.

Keywords Everywhere: Cheapest Per Keyword for Volume Data

  • Price: all plans are annual. Bronze is $84 a year for 100,000 credits, and Silver is $168 a year for 400,000.
  • What you get: one credit returns search volume, CPC, competition and 12-month trend data for one keyword. On Bronze, that is $0.84 per 1,000 keywords.
  • What you give up: credits expire after one year, and that credit price covers those four data points only.
  • Best for: anyone who only needs volume and CPC on large lists. Among the paid options here, nothing is cheaper per keyword.

Free Options: Search Console, Keyword Planner and Free Plans

  • Google Search Console is free and shows the queries your own site appears for, with clicks, impressions, CTR and average position. It only covers sites you verify, so it won't show competitors. It is also where you find the organic keywords that Google Analytics hides as "(not provided)" (here is why Google Analytics hides those keywords).
  • Google Keyword Planner sits in Google Ads under the Tools menu. It estimates monthly searches and ad costs, but Google requires you to finish account setup, including billing information, before you can use "Get ideas for new keywords."
  • Semrush Free and Ahrefs Free both cost nothing. Semrush caps you at 10 reports a day. Ahrefs gives limited Site Explorer and Site Audit data for your own site.
  • SEO Stuff's free keyword generator returns up to 20 keyword suggestions with difficulty scores and search volume once you sign in.

A free stack covers your own site well. It is thin on competitor research, so that is the gap to plan for.

If you can't tell whether you need a full suite or just better keyword data, request a free SEO and AI search audit and start from what your site is actually missing.

Where SEO Stuff Fits, and Where It Doesn't

SEO Stuff sells credits instead of subscriptions. Essentials is $49 for 400 credits and Startup is $99 for 3,000 credits. Both are one-time purchases, and one credit is one keyword lookup.

What the credits pay for:

  • Keywords explorer: search volume, keyword difficulty, search intent and AI Overview data for a keyword, domain or URL, with filters for difficulty, volume, CPC and intent, and export.
  • Bulk keyword search: up to 1,000 keywords at once with volume, difficulty, intent and CPC, exported to CSV.
  • Backlinks explorer: the backlinks pointing to any domain, filterable by follow or nofollow, linking domain, target URL and first or last seen date, with CSV export.

What it does not do: there is no site audit crawler, no daily rank tracking, no content editor and no AI prompt tracking. The free audit is a personalized report delivered within 48 hours, not a crawler you run yourself.

If those missing features are what you use in Semrush every week, SEO Stuff won't replace them. It covers keyword and backlink research, and you pay only when you run lookups.

Semrush vs SEO Stuff: Worked Cost Examples

These examples use list prices only. Startup works out to about $0.033 per keyword ($99 divided by 3,000) and Essentials to about $0.12 ($49 divided by 400). Semrush's SEO plan costs $1,668 a year on monthly billing, or $1,407.96 a year billed annually ($117.33 times 12).

Example 1: One Project of 2,500 Keywords

  • Semrush: one month of the SEO plan for $139, then cancel. Or $0, if the seven-day trial's limits let you finish in time.
  • SEO Stuff: one Startup pack for $99.
  • Difference: $40 in SEO Stuff's favor against a paid month. If you can do the work inside the free trial, Semrush is cheaper.

Example 2: 1,000 Keywords Every Month

  • Semrush SEO plan: $1,407.96 a year billed annually, or $1,668 billed monthly.
  • SEO Stuff: one Startup pack every three months, so four packs a year for $396.
  • Difference: $1,011.96 a year less than Semrush's annual billing (about 72% less), or $1,272 less than monthly billing (about 76% less).

That gap counts keyword lookups only. Semrush's price also includes 500 tracked keywords and site audits. If you would need to pay for those somewhere else, add that cost to the SEO Stuff side.

Example 3: 5,000 Keywords Every Month

  • Semrush SEO plan: $1,407.96 a year billed annually.
  • SEO Stuff: 60,000 lookups a year is 20 Startup packs, or $1,980.
  • Difference: Semrush is $572.04 a year cheaper, and it includes tracking and audits.

The Break-Even Point

At $0.033 per keyword, $117.33 buys about 3,555 lookups and $139 buys about 4,212. So once you research more than roughly 3,500 to 4,200 keywords a month, Semrush's entry plan is cheaper on price alone, as long as its report limits fit how you work. Below that, credits cost less for keyword lookups.

Before you spend credits or a subscription on a big keyword list, get a free SEO audit to see which topics your site can realistically rank for.

When Semrush Is the Better Choice

Stay with Semrush, or move to SE Ranking or Ahrefs, if any of these describe you:

  • You track rankings daily across several sites. The SEO plan covers 500 keywords on 5 sites, and Advanced covers 5,000 on 40.
  • You run scheduled site audits and work through the issues they find.
  • You want AI prompt tracking and SEO data in one place. If that is the main draw, compare Semrush One with other tools that track brand mentions in ChatGPT and AI search.
  • Your team works in it every day and has reports built on it. Rebuilding that workflow costs time too.
  • You research more than about 3,500 keywords a month.
  • You need API access, which Semrush includes on Advanced.

When Pay-Per-Use Credits Are the Better Fit

Credits make more sense if:

  • Your research comes in bursts (a new site, a quarterly content plan, a client pitch), not every day.
  • You mostly need volume, difficulty, intent and backlink lists, not tracking.
  • You don't want a recurring bill for months when you do no research.
  • You already watch your own rankings in Search Console.

How to Lower Your Semrush Bill Without Switching

If you like Semrush and only want it to cost less:

  • Pay annually. On the SEO plan that is $1,407.96 a year instead of $1,668, which saves $260.04. The catch is that refunds only apply within 7 days of a first annual purchase.
  • Drop to the SEO plan if you don't use AI prompt tracking. Starter costs $60 a month more.
  • Use the free plan between projects and pay only for the months with heavy research. Monthly plans aren't refundable, so cancel before the next billing date.
Whichever tool you end up paying for, get your free SEO and AI search audit first so you know what to fix before you start pulling data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Semrush free or paid?

Both. Semrush has a free plan with 10 reports a day and one demo project, and paid plans from $139 a month ($117.33 billed annually). It also offers a seven-day free trial that charges you automatically unless you cancel.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Semrush?

Yes. Ahrefs Starter ($29 a month), Ubersuggest (from $29), Mangools (from $37.70) and SpyFu ($39) all cost less but cover less. If you only need keyword lookups, Keywords Everywhere and SEO Stuff's one-time credit packs cost less than a monthly subscription at low volumes.

Why is Semrush so expensive?

One subscription bundles keyword research, competitor research, rank tracking and site audits, and the Semrush One plans add AI visibility tracking on top. Each plan includes one user, and extra seats start at $45 a month, so team costs climb quickly.

Which is better, Ahrefs or Semrush?

Neither wins clearly on price. Ahrefs Lite is $129 a month and Semrush's SEO plan is $139. Lite tracks 750 keywords to Semrush's 500, while Semrush puts AI prompt tracking in its $199 Starter plan. Semrush has a seven-day free trial. Ahrefs has none, so the cheapest way to test it is one paid month of Starter or Lite.

Does Semrush give refunds?

Only in one case. Semrush offers a 7-day money-back guarantee on a first subscription with a term of 12 months or more. Month-to-month subscriptions are not refunded.

What company owns Semrush?

Adobe. It completed its acquisition of Semrush on April 28, 2026, and Semrush told customers there would be no immediate changes to their services, billing or access.

Final Thoughts

Semrush is a good tool, and its price makes sense when you use most of it. Look at which parts you open each week. If it's rank tracking and audits, stay, or compare SE Ranking and Ahrefs. If it's mostly keyword and backlink lookups, a $29 to $39 plan, a free stack or a credit pack will cover it for much less, and the worked examples above show where that stops being true.
