What Is AIO? AI Search Optimization for ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity (2026 Guide)

Carlos GarciaCarlos GarciaPublished Updated

AIO, short for AI optimization, is the work of getting your brand cited, mentioned and recommended in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI features. In SEO, AIO is also common shorthand for Google AI Overviews, so "rank in AIO" often means getting your page cited as a link inside an AI Overview. Both uses point to the same goal: be a source the AI pulls from when it answers questions in your market.

You will see AIO used two ways in search marketing, sometimes in the same meeting.

  • AI optimization (also written artificial intelligence optimization). Optimizing your content, technical setup and reputation so AI answer engines cite or recommend you. Wikipedia lists AIO as another name for generative engine optimization (GEO).
  • AI Overviews. Google calls the feature AI Overviews. SEO tools and practitioners shorten it to AIO. Advanced Web Ranking, for example, named its AI Overview tracking engine "Google Search + AIO."

Semrush uses the first meaning for its Enterprise AIO (AI Optimization) product. Advanced Web Ranking uses the second. When an agency, a tool or a colleague says AIO, ask which one they mean before you agree to a plan or a budget.

Outside marketing, AIO usually stands for "all-in-one," and AIO Search is also the name of an unrelated all-in-one meta-search browser add-on. If that is what you were looking for, this article is about something else.

AIO vs GEO vs AEO vs LLMO

These labels overlap almost completely. Wikipedia treats GEO, AEO (answer engine optimization), LLMO (large language model optimization), AIO and "AI SEO" as names for the same practice. AEO frames the work around being the direct answer, LLMO frames it around the models, and AIO is the broad catch-all that also doubles as AI Overviews shorthand. Use whichever one your team already uses.

Is AIO the Same as SEO?

Mostly, yes. Google says so directly in its guide to optimizing for generative AI features: "From Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO."

AIO does go further than classic SEO in three places.

  • ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude run their own search crawlers, and Copilot works through Bing, so being indexed by Google alone does not cover you.
  • Mentions on other sites carry more of the load. When an AI tool answers "best X for Y," it names brands from the pages it retrieved and from what the model already knows, and many of those pages are not yours.
  • Success is measured in citations and mentions, not only in rankings and clicks.

How AI Search Platforms Find and Cite Sources in 2026

Here is what each company documents about how its product finds and cites pages, and what that means for your site.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

AI Overviews are the AI summaries at the top of some Google results. AI Mode is Google's conversational search, which Google describes as particularly helpful when a question needs "further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons."

Google's requirements for both are short. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet, and Google states that "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode." Both features may use "query fan-out," issuing multiple related searches across subtopics to build one answer, so covering the questions around a topic gives you more ways in.

You can limit what Google shows with nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. Search Console also has a Search generative AI control (Settings, then Search generative AI), rolled out to all websites as of August 31, 2026, that excludes your site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover's generative features. Google says the setting is not used as a ranking or inclusion signal for the rest of Search.

For what has changed in AI Mode this year, see our breakdown of Google's AI Mode rollout.

Web search works on every ChatGPT plan, from Free to Enterprise, and for people who are not signed in. ChatGPT searches on its own when a question needs current information. OpenAI says it "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries," sends them to third-party search providers, and shows the answer with inline citations and a Sources button.

  • OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, but sites that block OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." Check your robots.txt for it.
  • GPTBot is a separate crawler that collects content that may be used for model training. OpenAI says the settings are independent, so you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.
  • ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends people through, so that traffic is easy to spot in Google Analytics.

Perplexity

Perplexity searches the web in real time, and each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources. Its crawler, PerplexityBot, is designed to "surface and link websites in search results," and Perplexity says it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Perplexity recommends allowing it in robots.txt. A second agent, Perplexity-User, visits pages when a user asks a question, and Perplexity says it generally ignores robots.txt because a person started the request.

Claude

Claude can search the web when web search is turned on, and Anthropic says responses include citations so users can check the sources. Anthropic runs three bots with different jobs.

  • Claude-SearchBot indexes content to improve search results. Anthropic says blocking it "may reduce your site's visibility and accuracy in user search results."
  • Claude-User fetches pages when a person asks Claude a question.
  • ClaudeBot collects content that may be used for model training.

All three honor robots.txt, so you can opt out of training and still stay visible in Claude's search.

Gemini

The Gemini app can ground its answers in content from the Google Search index. Google-Extended is the robots.txt token that controls whether Google may use your content to train Gemini models and to ground answers in the Gemini app. Google says Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not used as a ranking signal there, so blocking it is a decision about Gemini, not about your organic rankings.

Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft's documentation says Copilot turns the prompt into search queries, sends them to the Bing search service, and uses what comes back to ground its answer. If Bing cannot crawl or index a page, Copilot has nothing to ground on from that page.

AIO Optimization Techniques: What to Do On Your Site and Off It

None of this is exotic. Most of it is good SEO done carefully, plus more work outside your own domain than most teams are used to.

On-Page: Make Your Pages Easy to Quote

  1. Answer the question in the first two to four sentences under each heading, then add the detail. Google says you do not need a special writing style or tiny content chunks for its AI features. A clear answer near the top is simply easier for any system, and any reader, to quote.
  2. Add something that is not on every other page. Google's guide warns about "commodity content" that "typically adds little unique insight for readers." Your own data, real prices, process details and clear opinions give an AI answer a reason to cite you.
  3. Be specific. Use full product and company names, and state what things cost, who they are for and where you operate.
  4. Keep facts consistent across your site, Google Business Profile, Merchant Center, review sites and social profiles. When details conflict, you are leaving it to the model to pick one.
  5. Keep important content in text, which Google lists as a best practice for AI features, and use structured data only where it matches what is visible on the page. Google says no special schema.org markup is required.
  6. Update pages when facts change. An AI answer that repeats your old pricing does you no favors.

Technical: Let the Right Crawlers In

  • Check robots.txt for Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot. Blocking any of them works against you in that product's search results.
  • Check your CDN and firewall too. Google's checklist says crawling should be allowed in robots.txt "and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure," and bot protection rules can block crawlers you meant to allow without anyone noticing.
  • Treat training crawlers as a separate decision. GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended relate to model training (and, for Google-Extended, Gemini grounding). Blocking them does not remove you from ChatGPT, Claude or Google search results.
  • Make sure key pages are indexed in both Google and Bing, and submit your sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools, since Copilot grounds its answers through Bing.
  • Do not block snippets on pages you want cited. A page has to be snippet-eligible to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
  • Do not prioritize llms.txt. Google says Google Search does not use machine-readable AI files like it.

Off-Site: Get Mentioned Where AI Tools Look

When an AI tool with web search recommends a product or service, it works from the pages it retrieved. If your brand is missing from those pages, your own site is carrying the whole load.

  • Run the prompts that matter to you, by hand or with a tracker, and list the domains that keep getting cited.
  • Get your brand onto those pages honestly: reviews, comparison articles, industry roundups, podcasts, partner pages, and real participation in communities like Reddit where it fits.
  • Do not buy fake mentions. Google's guide says plainly that "seeking inauthentic 'mentions' across the web isn't as helpful as it might seem."
  • If you sell products or serve a local area, keep Merchant Center and your Business Profile current. Google lists both in its best practices for AI features.

For a step-by-step version of all this, use our checklist for ranking in ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity.

How to Rank in AIO (Google AI Overviews)

If AIO means AI Overviews for you, the work is narrower and more familiar.

  1. Be a strong organic result for the query and the related questions around it. AI Overviews draw on Google's index, and query fan-out means supporting links can come from related searches, not only the one the user typed.
  2. Answer the core question near the top of the page, and cover the obvious follow-ups (cost, time, alternatives, how to choose) on the same page or on pages it links to.
  3. Keep the page snippet-eligible. Do not use nosnippet on it, and do not set max-snippet so low that Google has little to show.
  4. Use the Generative AI performance report in Search Console to see which pages already get AI Overview and AI Mode impressions, then improve those first.
  5. Look at the AI Overview for your top queries and note what the cited pages cover that yours does not.

How to Measure AIO: Are AI Tools Citing You?

No single dashboard covers every AI tool. Use a mix of manual checks, first-party reports and a tracker if the budget allows.

Manual Prompt Checks

  • Write 20 to 50 prompts a buyer would actually type: "best [category] for [use case]," comparisons with named competitors, and direct questions about your brand.
  • Run them once a month in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude (with web search on), Copilot and Google AI Mode.
  • For each answer, log whether your brand is mentioned, whether your URL is cited, and which competitors and domains appear.
  • Expect answers to change from one run to the next. Judge the trend across many prompts, not any single answer.

Google Search Console

Google added a Generative AI performance report (Search) in June 2026. It shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date. Google says it rolled out to all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026, though not every property has access yet and a site needs enough impressions to see data.

The limits matter. The report shows impressions only, with no clicks and no query list, and AI feature clicks are still mixed into the regular Performance report under the Web search type.

Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance

Bing launched an AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools as a public preview in February 2026. It shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and select partner integrations, with total citations, average cited pages and "grounding queries," the phrases the AI used when it retrieved your content. A June 2026 update added intents, topics, citation share and period comparison. It does not report clicks.

Analytics and Server Logs

  • In Google Analytics, filter for utm_source=chatgpt.com to see visits from ChatGPT search, and check referral traffic from the other AI tools' domains.
  • In your server logs, look for OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User. Crawler visits do not guarantee citations, but zero visits is a clear warning sign.

Tools for AIO

You do not need a big stack. Group tools by the job they do.

  • First-party reports (free): Google Search Console's Generative AI performance report and Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report.
  • AI visibility trackers: Ahrefs Brand Radar tracks mentions and citations across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit covers ChatGPT search, Google AI Mode and Gemini. Advanced Web Ranking's "Google Search + AIO" engine tracks AI Overviews specifically.
  • Research tools: keyword and backlink tools to find the questions people ask and the sites that already get cited. SEO Stuff's keyword and backlink tools run on credits, so you can size up a market without a monthly subscription.

Platform coverage changes often, so confirm what a tracker covers on the vendor's site before you pay. For a longer comparison, see our guide to ChatGPT SEO tools and how brands get mentioned in AI search.

AIO Strategy: A Simple 90-Day Plan

A good AIO strategy starts with the prompts that make you money and works outward.

  1. Pick 20 to 50 commercial prompts, the questions a buyer asks right before choosing a product or provider in your category.
  2. Take a baseline. Run the manual checks and pull the Search Console and Bing reports.
  3. Fix access: robots.txt, CDN rules, indexing in Google and Bing, and snippet settings.
  4. Upgrade the five to ten pages that should answer those prompts, with direct answers, original information and current facts.
  5. Work the citation sources. List the domains AI tools cite for your prompts and pursue genuine mentions there.
  6. Re-measure every month and shift effort toward the prompts that are moving.

For more on structuring the content itself, read our guide to SEO for AI search engines and getting cited in ChatGPT, Claude and more.

SEO Stuff sells this work as one-time packages (content built for AI citation, guest posts on established sites and a full SEO and AI search audit), but the steps are the same if you do it in-house.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does AIO mean in SEO?

AIO usually means AI optimization: getting your brand cited and recommended in AI answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot. It is also widely used as shorthand for Google AI Overviews.

Is AIO the same as SEO?

Largely. Google says optimizing for its generative AI features is still SEO. AIO adds work for other platforms, such as allowing their search crawlers and earning mentions on the sites those tools cite.

How do I rank in AIO?

For Google AI Overviews, keep the page indexed and snippet-eligible, rank well for the query and its related questions, and answer clearly near the top. For ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude, also allow their search crawlers and get mentioned on the pages they cite.

What are the best tools for AIO?

Start with the free reports in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. For cross-platform tracking, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit and Advanced Web Ranking each cover a different mix of AI platforms.

Can I keep my site out of Google AI Overviews?

Yes. Search Console's Search generative AI control lets you exclude your site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover's generative features, and Google says it does not affect the rest of Search. You can also limit individual pages with nosnippet or max-snippet.

Final Thoughts

AIO is mostly SEO fundamentals applied to more places. Let the AI search crawlers in, make pages worth quoting, get mentioned on the sites AI tools already read, and check the new Google and Bing reports every month. None of it is a one-time fix, so put the monthly check on the calendar now.
